The Little Things That Matter in Recovery

The Little Things That Matter in Recovery

For many people, including those with problems with addiction, it can be easy to get overwhelmed with the daily routine and pressures of life. These pressures can trigger emotional and mental responses in which we want to respond with ineffective behaviours, such as engaging in our addiction and put you at risk for relapse.
The following are some tips on reducing your vulnerability of relapse:

TREAT PHYSICAL ILLNESS

It is important to take care of the physical self. With cold and flu season upon us, it is even more important to stay on top of our health. See your doctor when necessary and take medication as prescribed.

BALANCED EATING

Maintain a healthy weight and eat a balanced diet. Monitor your intake of “junk” food and food that you know affects your mood.

AVOID MOOD-ALTERING SUBSTANCES

Substances whether legal or illegal can have an affect on your mood and affect your ability to cope effectively.

BALANCE SLEEP

Aim to go to sleep and wake up at regular times.

GET EXERCISE

Any form of exercise that gets your heart rate up is good to engage in. Aim to exercise for approximately 20- 30 minutes

BUILD MASTERY

Do at least one thing a day that make you feel competent. It can be as simple as making the best the best cheese sandwich you ever tasted.

These six tips can be remembered using the play-on acronym: “PLEASE Master”. The first five tips are meant to keep your physical health stable. Having a state of physical well-being makes dealing with the emotional and mental stresses that much easier. The last tip of building mastery is intended to increase your self-worth and confidence. By engaging in these seemingly little tasks, you can reduce your vulnerability and be better prepared to face more emotional situations and cope ahead of time with difficult situations.
